Simon's Town is an hour's journey from Cape Town by train - a famous train ride along the coast with spectacular views of the sea.
It is named after Governor Simon van der Stel who recommended in 1687 that the Dutch East India Company use Simon's Town as a winter anchorage because it is more sheltered than Table Bay. In 1814 the Royal Navy took over Simon's Town as its South Atlantic Station and remained until the base was handed over to the South African Navy in 1957.
Long Beach, Seaforth Beach and Boulders Beach enjoy smooth water protected from the wind. Boulders Beach is the home to the world's famous Jackass Penguins.
Simon's Town is steeped in history - twenty-one of the buildings in St George's Street are over 150 years old. Admiralty House was the first building to be erected in 1720. Other places of interest are the museum, the SA Naval Museum, the West Dockyard, the Warrior Toy Museum and Jubilee Square where a sculpture of Able Seaman Just Nuisance is to be found. This was made in remembrance of the Great Dane who befriended and assisted naval ratings during World War II.
Simon's Town offers golf, bowls, squash, sailing and ski boat angling as well as scenic walks towards Cape Point.
